Regeringen beslutade den 10 oktober 2002 att ansluta sig till konventionen. Ratifikationsinstrumentet deponerades den 13 januari 2003 hos UNESCO:s generaldirektör tillsammans med en förklaring i enlighet med artikel 1 i konventionen rörande den egendom som är av stor betydelse för arkeologin, förhistorien, historien, konsten eller vetenskapen och som tillhör vissa i artikeln angivna kategorier. Konventionen trädde i kraft den 24 april 1972 och för Sverige trädde den i kraft den 13 april 2003.
