LETTER OF INTENT

BETWEEN

THE MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA

AND

THE MINISTER FOR DEFENCE OF THE KINGDOM OF SWEDEN

Having met on 19 November in Brussels:

The Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Lithuania, and The Minister for Defence of the Kingdom of Sweden

1 Highlighted the importance of Sweden’s recent accession to NATO and its significance to the security of the Baltic Sea region and the Alliance as a whole. 2 Emphasized the shared commitment to enhancing the deterrence and defence posture within the region as an integral part of the broader NATO collective defence framework to counter both immediate and long-term threats from Russia. 3 Acknowledged the strategic importance of the Baltic Sea and essential role of air defence for NATO’s deterrence and defen ce posture, and underlined the necessity of promoting situational awareness and possible responses to common threats in the Baltic Sea Region. 4 Hereby the Minister for Defence of the Kingdom of Sweden declared Sweden’s intention to contribute to NATO Air Policing, including the Baltic Sea region. Sweden supports NATO’s Rotational Air Defence Model , exploring the possibilities for Sweden to contribute to its implementation within the alliance, including in Lithuania with ground based air defence capabilities. 5 Declared their intention to explore the possibility for the countries to cooperate closely in enhancing regional maritime situational awareness, developing harbour protection and coastal defence capabilities. 6 Declared their intention to continue to work on the mutually beneficial cooperation of defence procurement and continue to explore joint opportunities related to capability development and increasing industrial production capacity, including tracked combat vehicles. 7 Highlighted the work done to support Ukraine under the Demining Coalition and training of Ukrainian soldiers, and reiterated their commitment to continuing long-term, comprehensive assistance to Ukraine, including political and practical support to help Ukraine achieve its strategic goal of NATO and EU membership. Defence of the Kingdom of Sweden declared Sweden ’s willingness to contribute financially to the Lithuania-Iceland led Demining Coalition fund. 8 Emphasized the need to cooperate on enhancing societal resilience to hostile influence and safeguard critical infrastructure in our countries. 9 Acknowledged that the security of the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic is increasingly interlinked. Both Sweden and Lithuania are committed to strengthening dialogue and security cooperation with like-minded partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
